Welcome to the Aldgate play
A series of events throughout 2016 /17 are building the foundations of a Community Play to be performed in May and June 2018 in celebration of the opening of the new Aldgate Square. We expect a cast of over a hundred community members to perform a promenade premier play in a large tent on the square. Aldgate Community events, a voluntary organisation has been set up to mange the project and are working together with Jon Oram and playwright Stephen Lowe to 'find the play' through historical research, contemporary soundings, interviews, drama searches and workshops. All the creative events throughout this year are designed to inform the play.
This web site will keep you up do date with the script development process but you can follow the progress of the wider project on the Aldgate Community Events website and through the Director's Blog.
Alongside the Aldgate Play Claque are running a Heritage three part Heritage project Aldgate in Conversation are recorded interviews or conversations about peoples lives in and journeys to London; Aldgate In Camera is a Victorian photographic exhibition tour of the East side of the city and finally local people tell the stories of the lives and cultures in personalised Exhibitions in a suitcase. The different elements of the Heritage project will come together as an Empty Gallery Exhibition in July 2017 and again during the run of the play in 2018.
